Join us for an evening of both traditional and new innovative pipe band music as we welcome Peel Regional Police Pipe Band to the stage. 2010 was a landmark year for the Peel Regional Police Pipe Band. Undefeated on the PPBSO(Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario) contest circuit and winner of the 2010 North American Championship at Maxville, the band also won the PPBSO Champion Supreme title as the top Grade 1 band. Not only was the band a huge success on the competition circuit, they were also recognized by the Chief of the Peel Regional Police Service for their dedication to the service and the citizens of Peel Region. Chief Mike Metcalf presented all of the band members with the Chief’s Citation coin, the highest honour that can be awarded by the Chief of Police.

They have put together a remarkable performance to highlight all the talents of this multi facetted ensemble. Pipe Major John Cairns is well known internationally for his unique pipe tune compositions and ability to construct pipe band medleys that appeal to both the pipe band efficienaudo and lay person as well. John comes from a piping family that has a long and prestigious musical history, and is recognized today as one of the World’s top bagpipers. In 1999, John achieved a feat that every piper dreams of – he became the 11th person in the history of piping and the only person from outside of Scotland to win the two Highland Society of London Gold Medals for solo piping at both Oban and Inverness, Scotland in the same year.

Lead Drummer Graham Brown began drumming at the age of nine and three short years later, he was the Lead Drummer of the Milton Optimist Pipe Band, founded by his mother Gail. The band was very successful, winning the World Juvenile Championships in 1994, and the Grade 3 Worlds in 1997. In 2007 he returned home to Canada and was named the Lead Drummer of the Grade 1 Peel Regional Police Pipe Band. The Peel corps are the 2010 North American Champions. In the Solo realm Graham has won the North American Championships at Maxville six times, the Agnew‐Harrison Invitational five times, the Kansas City Gold Medal, and has been a finalist at the World Solo Drumming Championships.

We are also proud to introduce the Alma College Pipe Band who will make their public debut and showcase the talent we have in our own back yard. Lead by Pipe Major Andrew Duncan the Alma College Pipe Band is composed of bagpipers from all across the Mid West. 2011 marks a huge step forward for the Alma College Pipe Band. This is the first year in the history of Alma College that the band has officially registered with the MidWest Pipe Band Association. The band is looking forward to entering Grade Five competitions in the Fall of 2011. The Alma College Pipe Band would like to thank the members of the Alma College community, The Alma Highland Festival, and the MidWest Pipe Band Association for their continued support. We would also like to thank the Peel Regional Pipe Band and the Peel Regional Police Service for supporting and participating in this concert.

Concert begins at 8:00 pm - doors open at 7:30 pm. General Admission Tickets are $10. Advance tickets available on-line or at the Highland Festival office.
